There could be many reasons for it happening to you. How much RAM and Graphics have you installed. How resource hungry are the Applications that you are running. Are all Drivers up to date, and are all 3rd party programs compatible, or installed in Vista compatibility mode? 1st thing I'd look at is Anti-Virus. And, it is not a standard happening in Windows 7.

Have you tried Process Explorer ?http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx Do not forget the symbols library for win 7. And create a icon on the desktop so that you can get processexplorer up and running while this event is happening... You also might what to check out this page:http://www.microsoft.com/emea/spotlight/sessionh.aspx?videoid=722 Bruce ;-)

That and Autoruns and some quite other awesome tools on:http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/default.aspxIt's all there! The Debugging tools and Kernrate are in these links, but debugging is quite hard, but very fun too.http://www.microsoft.com/whdc/devtools/debugging/default.mspxhttp://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=d6e95259-8d9d-4c22-89c4-fad382eddcd1&DisplayLang=enGo and watch all other videos from Channel 9 and Mark. There are some good ones about spyware/virus removing. Well, all the things we all do now, but worth see it from the expert. Adelino Araujo

I had that problem happen to me the day after I installed Win 7. I did a clean install and had not installed any applications or drivers, just the Win 7 OS. I started the computer on that second day, was not using it, and at some point I found it unresponsive. No mouse or keyboard response of any kind. I had to force a shutdown then start again. This happened 3 times that day, but has not happened since then. I have since installed apps and used it like It was a normal workstation, no more problems. Still a mystery to me, but I don't think about it any more.

There could have been a hardware conflict. My copy of Win7 has already updated a few times this week which did fix a few issues I was having. At this time, this sounds like the issue. Wish you luck!

I also forgot to add that it did freez for about 5 minutes twice during the instalation after the reformat, but again it seems that there was still background activity.

I'm seeing something similar in Word. It seems to get stuck when trying to save a file...this has been happening over the last few days and had not happened in the past. Machine becomes totally unresponsive.
